Bat For Lashes - Whats a Girl to Do? (Echo)
4/5
By: Tom Hocknell
With the first four beats, Bat For Lashes' fourth single threatens to break into the Ronettes 'Be My Baby', but instead leads into a twisted, soft serenade, a long way from panavision post-war holiday camps and the Twist. Instead its heavy 60's style percussion underpins the atmospheric piano, and the desperate question of what's a girl to do, when she loves someone and the thrill has gone...
It's out of step and consequently timeless in the way good music should be. At first the tune seems too slight to sing after the first listen, but it lingers all day, like a question of your own, what's a girl to do? It'll be disconcerting for the average male, strangely alluring for the above average. It's a desperate plea for advice, a howling at the moon, and an opaque 60's Phil Spector-style, pop gem, with a dash of Kate Bush and most importantly criminally too short. Now where's the play again button?
