The Hours - Ali in the Jungle (A&M Universal)
3/5

If you are of the opinion, as I am, that Damien Hirst is someone worth listening to, you too will probably be more than a little inclined to listen to a band who Hirst as described as "f**king genius, musically." Such is Hirst's affection for The Hours, he's not only lent them a quote that is likely to at least double their sales (well, maybe), he has also done them a huge favour by designing their artwork (a variation on his current penchant for skulls, just in case you were interested).
In truth, its difficult to see what Hirst saw in this band. Yes, 'Ali in the Jungle' is a jaunty little number with a quite lovely piano line looping throughout, but does it warrant being lauded by arguably Britain's greatest living modern artist? I don't think so, I may not be able to dunk a cow in formaldehyde, but I'd like to think I know genius when I see it, and this my friends certainly isn't all that. You won't hate it (well, you might hate it for being yet another re-release, but not for any other reason), but you may well have been expecting more. Hopefully, The Hours've got some better stuff waiting in the vault, otherwise I'll never be able to look at preserved farm animals in quite the same way ever again.
