The Concretes - Oh Boy (Licking Fingers)

5/5

By: Dan Monsell

The Concretes - Oh BoyAh, The Concretes. How nice it is to hear a band who feel so natural, whilst so many get lost in a sea of attempting to be something they so clearly are not. 'Oh Boy' is a pure breath of fresh air, the sort of record so filled with charm that a listen causes the whole body to relax as if it had been dipped in a bubble bath at exactly the right temperature. Lisa Milberg's softer-sounding, quintessentially Swedish vocal conjures up such proper romance that it's impossible to not get bowled over by such a song.

The additional tracks on the record are almost equally excellent, with the exception of a beat-pumping re-mix of a track called 'Justin Kids', which succeeds in totally sucking all the soul out of the band - something that takes a great deal of sucking. 'The Sentence' and 'Ed's Kids' however are more successful slower-paced affairs (almost impossible considering the lazy float of the feature track) and the Nico and the Velvets sounding summer drawl of the band comes to the surface even more on these cuts than on previous material. Another success for Swedish indie-pop; and another victory for new music: truly, this is one of the finest releases we've heard in months.
