Arctic Monkeys - Fluorescent Adolescent (Domino)

4/5

By: Dan Monsell

Arctic Monkeys - Fluorescent AdolescentAfter hearing that 'Brainstorm' was to be the first single from the band's sophomore LP, 'Favourite Worst Nightmare', the certainty its follow up 45 was to be 'Fluorescent Adolescent' seemed as likely as the possibility of rain delays at Wimbledon. Despite the bulk of the new material veering towards a harder hitting display of rock, more akin to a northern Led Zeppelin (had they lived on the estate), 'Fluorescent Adolescent's softer sounding pop perfection could never slip past any music big wig with half a brain cell. The fact that band's Domino imprint is actually run by some of the smartest folk in the biz is quite irrelevant - the track's imminent release was only a matter of time.

From the opening back-and-forth of the guitar and bass, bouncing along as Turner taunts; 'you used to get it in your fish nets, now you only get it in your night dress', the whole affair is most playful in its romp through classic song writing. It even feels possible that these disgustingly overachieving youngsters could be playing beneath their ability, in order to knock something this simple out. Although the 'northern soul' description has often been batted about to describe the band, this is surely the closest the band has come to fulfilling that label, with a deeper rhythm to the track that sits back and grooves in a way that the band haven't quite done on other, mostly faster-paced tracks.

We won't even bother to go in for the wholes spiel about how 'the band mature with every release'/ 'every single shows how Arctic Monkeys aren't just hyped up nothings, destined to eventually fail', we'll let the that the Arctic Monkeys continue to release high calibre singles do the talking themselves.
