Billy Talent - Surrender (Atlantic)

3/5

By: Sofie Jenkinson

Billy Talent - SurrenderStraight from the balladry end of the spectrum off most recent album 'Billy Talent II', 'Surrender' showcases the softer edge of the bands capabilities. The track swirls around the infectious multi-vocal, multi-layered chorus before breaking off into an instrumental interlude and joining up with a harmonious verse. Although there are moments where Benjamin Kowalewicz's vocals crack and slightly grate this only seems to add to the charm of the track.

It jumps from the vulnerable fragility of both the sentiment and vocals during the chorus, further complemented by the minor chords surrounding it, to the viciousness of the bridge, "searching until my hands bleed." Although the shades are slightly more pastel in this case, 'Surrender' still represents the ferocious attitude of Billy Talent in every note. The entirety of the track is supported by consistently strong and simple rhythm and guitar backing and layered with the musical intricacy in heightened moments to wrap around the vocal, creating a certain captivating allure that Billy Talent often seem to squeeze into many of their songs.
