The Hair - Disco/Retro (Louder Than Bombs)

4/5

By: Alex Lee Thomson

The Hair - Disco/RetroThere's something going on up there in Leeds - and not just the hilarious collapse of a once great football team. It seems that the second you take your eye of the city, a new band comes through sounding so bloody fantastic you have to stop in your tracks and take note. Very recently, a chap started a label designed to further showcase the downpour of talent that Leeds keeps spraying, in a similar move to Whiskas and his Dance To The Radio project that has since seen The Pigeon Detectives doing rather nicely indeed. This new indie outlet, the brilliantly titled, blatantly Smiths-influenced Louder Than Bombs Records, has an equally as vibrant trick in store with a sound clash between The Sunshine Underground and Foals, with all the strident guitars and disco anthems you'd assume would follow.

The Hair's 'Disco/Retro' is very Sunshine Underground, and we make no excuses for saying that is in no way a bad thing, the whole track brimming with fun and catchy dancefloor jauntiness, all revolving around one bitch of a central riff and drum distraction. This kind of music is of course so popular just now, and though it would seem that almost anybody could pull it off, it takes a band really extraordinary to have the needed prowess to tackle a chorus like this and still find time to slosh around a verse of some descript such as this one. The production is spot-on, Duels' own James taking on that aspect, and manages to sound as fresh as a daisy but dirty as a vomit ridden mosh-pit, the bass lines being the real grit of the single, a single that's once again made us all look upwards to Leeds. One can only dream as to what will come next from the ol' town as well as this vivacious new label, but no doubt it will involve oversized sunglasses and hairspray.
