Envelopes - Life On The Beach (Brille)

4/5

By: Gareth Roberts

Envelopes - Life on the BeachHaving burst onto the scene last year with their exquisitely exciting brand of scandi-pop littered with hooks and all things endearing, things of late have been a little more subdued for Envelopes.  Recent releases have failed to capture the imagination, yet thankfully they seem to have bucked this trend with 'Life on the Beach', a somewhat off-kilter, slightly awkward slice of pop brilliance.

Sounding like The Horrors jamming with The Cranberries, its Envelopes back to what they do best, brilliant pop with a discordant edge.

B-side Calypso is equally pleasing, a much lighter, carefree number that bounces along with all the abandonment of youth (ironic, as the lyrics include "I don't want to go to school / I don't want to go tomorrow"). All in all a very welcome return from a very promising band indeed.
