The Cribs - Moving Pictures (Wichita)
4/5
By: Gareth Roberts
After years of being indie-pop's perennial underachievers, the tide has finally turned for The Cribs. About bloody time too!
Eschewing their fondness for creating perfect pop songs shrouded in feedback, the equivalent of having a diamond and wrapping it in toilet paper, this time around the brothers Jarman (under the watchful eye of art-pop prince Alex Kapranos) have gone for an all out assault on the mainstream. Gone is the messy production and unfathomable lyrics that characterised some of their earlier work (as brilliant as it was), instead there is a sense of stoic resoluteness, its almost as if they have had enough of languishing as cult heroes in the background while lesser bands take the plaudits.
No sir, Flowers et al may have the sparkly suits and the inflated egos, but they have nothing on the songwriting ability of these boys. Its been a long time coming, but it looks like 2007 will be the year of the underdog, at last.
