Queens Of The Stone Age - 3’s & 7’s (Interscope)

2/5

By: Chris Pratt

Queens of the Stone Age - 3's & 7'sI must admit, I've never been a huge Queens Of The Stone Age fan. Sure they've had some pretty great singles over the years, like 'No One Knows' and 'Go With The Flow', but after seeing them live and listening further they seem to descend, more often than not, into mindless, boring chugging, with Josh Homme's bland delivery offering little melodic respite.

'3's and 7's' is another decent single - the first from the fourth Queens album 'Era Vulgaris' - propelled equally by fuzzy chunks of nagging power chords and a shrieking, descending lead line. Homme drawls about nothing much in the verse, before the mood switches to a dreamy chorus laced with cool pitch-shifted guitar, which has barely begun before it's back to the riffage once more.

And that's about it. A couple of searing solos add little to proceedings, so to be honest your appreciation of this song will hang precariously on whether or not you like the first ten seconds or so. I thought they were OK.
