Siouxsie - Into A Swan (Universal)

3/5

By: Ailsa Caine

Siouxsie - Into a SwanRemember when Blondie made a comeback? There was mixed anticipation, much sharp inhaling of breath and more than a few raised eyebrows. Well this was similar to the feeling upon the first listening of Siouxsie Sioux's debut (solo) single 'Into A Swan'.

Whilst Sioux never really had a legitimate 'break', 'Into A Swan' marks the singers stride back into the musical limelight. As such it's difficult to rate a single by a musical force whose is influence is so wide-ranging and synonymous with the recent actions of the British music scene. It's almost pointless to reel off specifically whose repertoire Sioux has infiltrated and as such it's almost pointless trying to describe what 'Into a Swan' sounds like, but if you're asking; it's is a rough, rocky mix of melody and darkness to which you would automatically affiliate Sioux in all her bondage and 'miss whiplash' glory.

However, what the song lacks is that lightness of touch which was responsible for inspiring other 80's comrades and brilliance such as The Cure; this is Miss Sioux on her own and as it turns out, her world is a pretty dark one. Therefore whilst the merits of a single from such a musical maverick are evident, anyone looking for a rehash of old Banshee's hits may want to beware - 'Hong Kong Garden' this ain't.
