The Stills - Helicopters (Drowned In Sound)

3/5

By: Ailsa Caine

The Stills - Without FeathersThe Stills embrace a change of tack in 'Without Feathers' and, in the name of turning that frown upside down, 'Helicopters' feels like a pulsating jaunt through nostalgia and hope.

Tim Fletcher lets his vocals loll over the guitars and bass in a manner that suggests he knows he can do more but just doesn't need to, as such 'Helicopters' plays like a confident single from a band who perhaps want to step away from comparisons to the more morose efforts of the 80's.

Whatever their motivations, this change suits The Stills and, even if for the sake of proving they are more than a one trick pony, it works. Depending on whether your view on life verges on the sweet or sour, 'Helicopters' could feel a tad 'edgeless', but the maturity of producing a track that relies on the quality of pared down guitar and vocals this soulful can't be ignored.
