Ash - End of the World (Wea)

3/5

By: Matt Tomiak

Ash - End of the WorldNot that they've ever let their standards properly drop, sometimes its easy to forget just how ruddy bloody brilliant Ash used to be. Still cherished most for that staggering run of hit singles in the mid 1990s (lest we forget, Tim Wheeler had penned and scored hit singles with 'Kung Fu', 'Girl From Mars', 'Goldfinger' and 'Oh Yeah' well before he was 20 years old) they've been appreciative recipients of Planet Pop's collective goodwill ever since. As we well know by now, it is physically impossible for Ash's Tim Wheeler to write a bad song. That guy's farts probably sounds sparklingly tuneful.

Still, 'End of the World' does not rank amongst their greatest moments- essentially it's 'Shining Light' with added lyrical concern regarding the state of the environment, replete with a touch of the slightly complacent post -'Urban Hymns' 'just add string section and existential angst for instant anthemic status' about it. But given the almost terrifying proficiency with which this band has churned out tremendous single after single over the past decade, we shan't begrudge them a bit of self-satisfaction.
