Maximo Park - Girls Who Play Guitars (Warp)
3/5
Maximo Park, the accent friendly indie fivesome from Newcastle, have produced another polished sentimental teen drama which queues a clichéd montage of 'boy meets girl' independent films.
This tickly single, marching around with happy sonic dimples, sounds like a cute puppy skipping around, pissing all over your cool new minimalist furniture. It's irritating and uncouth, but somehow still distinctly likeable.
The guitars roll around in the hay without getting dirty and English's punchy kick drum is horrifically and embarrassing enjoyable to dance to. Pushy and determined, the bass line full of cheeky pace fumbles its way up these girls' skirts and into their ears, persistently coupled with sickly sweet lyrics that will have you singing for days.
The reliable apples in the indie fruit bowl have made a playful snacklet of music which is as exciting and lusty as the beginning of a brand new relationship, but we have to wonder if eventually we'll experience a gleeful indifference to their sound - neither loving nor hating, simply tolerating.
