Simple Kid - 'Simple Kid 1' (2M)
3/5
By: Matt Tomiak

A folksy/funky amalgamation of Beck, The Beta Band and post-Britpop Blur, Cieran McFeely aka Simple Kid's debut album is perhaps neither as clever, nor as innovative, as he thinks it is.
It does provide, however, forty-five minutes of reasonably diverting musical mischief. McFeely may have penned songs about politics ('Staring At The Sun'), social conformity ('Average Man') and drugs (ahem, 'Drugs'), but 'SK1' isn't a serious, hard-hitting 'issues' LP.
Put simply (thus true to his moniker), it's just too laid-back for that. And thus the best moments here are, in fact, the more focused ones - such as the sleazy, Bowie-esque 'Supertramps & Superstars': cohesive evidence of McFeely's endeavour and just where he may be wise and bold enough to venture towards next.
