Captain Phoenix - Pistols and Hearts (Kind Canyon)
3/5
A famous sibling (the nice one from Razorlight), a token fire-haired drummer and pouch hugging jeans Russell Brand would encourage - Captain Phoenix are perching precariously, boffing on the wings of consumer driven fashion.
However, they do have a secret weapon which may just dig them out of the grave of the forgotten that Razorlight have kindly dug for them. It comes in the form of something we rarely get to hear in the current accent friendly brit-indie climate - vocal talent. That's right, a singer who sings; without winging or shouting and not a northern syllable in sight, Mr. Borrows' permissive yet intangibly colossal voice is deeply masculine, kind on the ear and seems effortlessly full-on.
'Pistols and Hearts' has a fair to middling undemanding indie-pop melody where mischievous predicable bass-lines hum relentless unmotivated clichés, and guitars, which sound like two piles of small chains grating feverishly against each other hardly convey the compositional wizardry that I believe this band to be capable of, but with Ben Burrows cavernous vocal command and the accompanying band's clear, concise ear for punchy captivating and painless pop, this initial release certainly boasts intense potential.
