The New Pornographers - Myriad Harbour (Matador)

4/5

By: Liam Manley

The New Pornographers - Myriad HarbourThe first single to be released from their recent fourth album, 'Challengers', 'Myriad Harbour' also just happens to be the strongest song from an uncharacteristically mid-paced collection. But where the Pornos used to race ahead, they're now happy to take the scenic root, letting the song build, ebb and flow, mixing in a wider range of instrumentation.

If letting go of their power pop side may turn some fans off, it's hard to argue against the change in style, judging from the evidence presented here. Part-Porno, part-Destroyer Dan Bejar takes the main role, with the remaining Pornos finishing his sentences where required and acting as a mixture of Greek chorus and call and response as his rambling adventure unravels, politely and sweetly reminding him of his shortfalls.

Bejar's skewed yet always friendly and ever so slightly regretful delivery is engaging enough to carry you through the scene hopping and occasionally nonsensical narrative. To the non-believers or the uninitiated this is a good place to start, but to those doubtful lovers: you've picked a bad time to lose faith.
