PJ Harvey - When Under Ether (Island)
4/5
By: Gareth Roberts
The first track to be lifted from her eighth studio album 'White Chalk', 'When Under Ether' is a typically sullen number. So subtle is it in fact that it's somewhat puzzling that it's been chosen as a single at all.
Yes, its haunting and ultimately very listenable, but in all honesty its not the sort of thing that I can imagine anyone other than the most ardent fans - maybe not even them - rushing out to purchase in its single guise. If you're looking for music bristling with excitement, 'When Under Ether' just isn't where you'll find it. Instead what you'll find is the sound of Polly Harvey coming of age and - dare I say it - mellowing out.
So then, unusual single fodder, but enjoyable nonetheless - even if it is in a strangely sadistic sort of way.
