Pete & The Pirates - Knots (Stolen)
4/5
By: Liam Manley
A rather welcome dose of highly sophisticated shambling from this Reading quintet where, in less than two minutes, they manage to assert themselves as this nation's saving grace.
What might appear at first as a struggle between the two guitarists in the intro is more a case of constant reassurance, with each new note rejecting the previous note's doubt. This contrast continues throughout the rest of the song, with their ever-ebullient melodicism always shining through, even taking into account the lyrical content that's a hungover stream of early morning/late afternoon contemplations; mixtures of confusion, melancholy, regret and failing to function on the most base of levels.
I would have commended them for avoiding the current zeitgeist of bastardised musical hall skiffle, were it not for the B-side, but even that's more advanced than most of the A-sides that the Doherty apes dream of.
A band not content with just trying to look up Kate Nash's skirt, they might be the last hope we have for redemption.
