The Maccabees - Toothpaste Kisses (Fiction)
3/5
By: Gareth Roberts
Famed for their brilliantly astute jitter pop, 'Toothpaste Kisses' is quite a departure in style for The Maccabees. This is well and truly, as they say, one for the ladies out there.
Drifting along with all the urgency of a summer day spent drinking Tizer by the lake (as is my understanding of yesteryears' pass-times), it's all you can do to stop yourself dozing into a dream full of pink rabbits and dancing hamsters. It's gentle, quirky, and twee-er than Kings of Convenience playing dominoes with Belle & Sebastian. Which is of course not to say that its not utterly compelling, but do expect to hear it soundtracking the more sentimental scenes in Hollyoaks before too long.
