The Departure - 7 Years (Parlophone / EMI)

3/5

By: Alex Lee Thomson

The Departure

The Departure are a band who should be bigger than they are now, yet they're still playing the small clubs the release of 'Mapped Out' should have broken them clean of years ago. Poor souls.

'7 Years' might sound suspiciously like Robbie Williams fronting Ash, but the brilliance of The Departure is that they've never pretended to be anything other than the pure power-pop band they are. They make great pop music though, stuff that's far more sincere than Ash could comprehend, stuff that retains a flawless gift for melody.

'7 Years' plods along satisfactorily enough, summoning 2005's 'Dirty Words' with a riff that squeals its equal potential. Whilst it might not grant them the status they've all but earned, it's a pounding elasticised nugget of pop gold that's as much fun to lose yourself in as it is to dance along with.
