Moving Units – Wrong Again / Crash ‘n Burn Victims (Metropolis)

3/5

By: Sian Norris

Moving Units - Crash 'N Burn Viticims / Wrong AgainA bit of a conundrum is this double a side, which will leave you wondering whether these two tracks were actually created by the same band at all. First up is 'Wrong Again', which opens with alarmingly euphoric guitars, the strength of which tends to make the vocal secondary, as whilst the instrumental is soaring, the lyrics and the vocal just aren't that strong. Yet there's a nice use of key changes, and although it can feel a bit repetitive, that never seemed to bother Arcade Fire, who Moving Units closely resemble on this track.

Which comes in complete contrast to the second side, 'Crash 'n Burn Victims', which leans more towards I-am-X and pays some homage to 80s electronica. Opening with a squelchy bass line which moves to a more dirty sound when mixed in with some vintage drum beats, 'Crash and Burn Victims' moves between nu rave and eighties disco in a way decidedly more interesting than the aforementioned 'Wrong Again'. It's far more minimalist than the sweeping and epic guitars on the first track, yet with the big and dutty bass it still packs a punch.
