The Maple State - We Swear By The Light Life (High Voltage)

4/5

By: Alex Lee Thomson

The Maple State - We Swear By The Light LifeY'know when you hear a song for the first time, be it live or on record, and you get that smile of pure contentment on your face because you know you've just found an ace song that you're going to love for a long time? When I heard this song at In The City, I had one such smile, and when I got home to find this CD on my desk, that smile grew. A lot.

'We Swear By The Light Life' isn't doing anything new, only doing what we already know and understand better than most. It's as catchy as Paul McCartney is sinister, and has a rough-cut vocal that makes it curiously sound like a pop-punk demo that's been produced and feathered into an indie box that it suits quite nicely.

The Maple State are not a standard band, and this certainly isn't a standard track. It's engrossing, magnetic and gripping. It dives straight into the action and whirls you around with sonic riffs and expanding melodies that move a new generation of band closer to your ears. It's fun but not cheap, making a genuine allure rather than using a tawdry hook, a simple idea that's so infrequently applied today it's shocking. It certainly elevates expectations for their debut mini album 'Say Scientist' due out early 2008.

The Maple State have a guitarist called Rick Higginbottom, and while that's a completely useless reflection of what they actually sound like, we just love that name so much we felt like we should share it with you.
