Shocking Pinks - End of the World (DFA)
4/5
By: Chris O'Toole
The new single from Death From Above signings Shocking Pinks, 'End of the World' is both danceable and ghostly. Hundred beat a second drums provide a cradle from which singer, and composer Nick Harte delivers an apocalyptic, post-Pulp diatribe of despair. Filled with unrequited love and quite desperation the track is beautiful but only in the eye of a single beholder. A long-forgotten yarn, where the lesson was never learned.
Taken from the groups self-titled debut album, 'End of the World' is a melancholy three minute stab at bliss. Evolving out of a wobbly, carousel drum filled beginning and building to a quite crescendo, the track is filled with dashes of colour; those fragments of dust that float by in the glare of sunshine. Acoustic guitars loop, synths splay and everybody's heart is broken.
Like breaking through a gossamer shell, the track is a heart-on-sleeve moment as the bombs start falling. A silent plea for renewal.
