Miranda Lee Richards - Lifeboat (Sonic Cathedral)
5/5
By: Alex Lee Thomson
Proof that Sonic Cathedral (the self proclaimed 'label that celebrates itself') have more than just a few curve balls up their sleeve, they now offer us calming female vocalist Miranda Lee Richards and her magnificently lingering and simplistic single 'Lifeboat'.
It has the touching warmth of an episode of 'The Wonder Years' while musically flying away with a grace normally reserved for Scandinavian ambient jazz bands. Her voice is pitch-perfect and while not being powerful is unremittingly fascinating and utterly absorbing such that you can fall hypnotically asleep in the embrace of her words and her soaring elegance. Not that it's all about the voice, the song itself is the thing and this one, for what's generally a standard ballad, has a trance-like beat and echoed melody that keeps it alive when most other artists of a similar field would allow it to droll away into pointless meandering vocal bollocks.
I'm not sure if love at first sight is possible, but love on first listen certainly is, and this girl has my attention.
