Free Blood - EP1 (ACTH)

3/5

By: Yousif Nur

Free Blood - EP1Funky, groovy and stupendously freaky - you can say all that just by listening to the first track on Free Blood's EP1. 'Quick and Painful' is just what one comes to expect of a release on the seminal Adventures Close To Home while at the same time, being a singularly impressive track in its own right. Replete with the post-punk stylings of handclaps, a tantalising bass line and falsettos as well as modern electro fidgeting, there's nothing superfluous about throwing around such mixes into the melting pot of ideas the band have. Indeed, on 'Quick and Painful', it works tremendously well.

'Never Hear Surf Music' is comparatively obscure and not too far from the territorial creativity of the New York No Wave scene from the early 80s. It's the sound of the band being as experimental as they are having fun throwing themselves into the beats. Once again, the bass proves influential for shoulder-shaking (we defy you not to move to this) and for a lazy comparison alert, it's not a million miles away from !!!.

And generous as Free Blood are with their inclusion of the many instruments in their arsenal of recordings, they throw in a few remixes from ACTH, Hot Chip and Chik Budo - all purveyors of dance filling wizardry. Isn't generosity a grand thing?
