Kaiser Chiefs - Love’s Not A Competition (But I’m Winning) (B-Unique)

3/5

By: Alex Lee Thomson

Kaiser Chiefs - Love's Not A Competition (But I'm Winning)Kaiser Chiefs are a force for good. Trust that and you'll love this song as it's an unproblematic 'Modern Way' like latter-album ditty that has now made it's way onto single format with all its initial charm in tow. Disagree wholeheartedly with that opening statement and you'll protest that this is sh*t. Simple fact is this wont make or break band relationships or loyalty, rather reinforce existing emotions towards Leeds most successful pop makers.

Annoyingly, the second LP from the gang has moments of real fortifying growth (such as 'Boxing Champ') and yet they have stumbled back on easy singles such as this to retain their crown as incontrovertibly Britain's biggest pop band. It's no 'Oh My God' or even an 'Everything Is Average Nowadays', arguably the new album's best song in its message alone, however this one is a glimpse of the untamed song writing proficiency of Ricky and co that shows they're a band much bigger than the immediate anthem hyper-ride of their signature tracks.

You might say this is more of an, "I predict a b-side" song, but it's still a strong one which, were it by any other band, be unquestionably loved. It resembles common indie pop but is finer, more rounded, superiorly crafted and will hopefully set a more serious pace for the cheeky stadium fillers.
