Captain Phoenix - Loneliness (Kind Canyon)
3/5
By: Alex Pyper
For a split second upon pressing the play button, 'Loneliness' sounds like it is going to explode into an eighties science fiction B-movie soundtrack. Perhaps disappointingly, we are instead presented with a well-crafted and glitteringly bluesy love song. Guitars gleam and sparkle, underpinned by the throbbing and pulsing of bass lines that will have even the hardiest listeners tapping their feet. Perched atop the swell of blues-folk pop, Captain Phoenix's front man Ben Burrows' voice betrays a jaded fragility, occasionally cracking as he delivers his needy rock-star lyrics. Indeed, the song as a whole has a gentle quality to it, particularly during the breakdowns containing Burrows' solemn observations of somebody leaving.
This of course, would be wonderful if Razorlight didn't exist. For fear of undervaluing what is clearly a talented band, all attempts have been made to judge this single on its merits alone. However, such is the similarity that I had to check that I was listening to the right CD. Of course, such comparisons are not necessarily a bad thing and this shall remain a radio-friendly and pleasingly catchy pop offering. It's just that this has so completely been done before (albeit to great success), that one can't help but feel that Captain Phoenix would be better off trying to innovate rather than emulate.
