Snuff - 'Numb Nuts' (Deceptive)

3/5

By: Toby L

Snuff - 'Numb Nuts'It's probably fair to say that you know what to expect from Snuff records, but that's by no means a problem. Buying one of their releases guarantees a good time punk album with light humour thrown in for free, this usually delivered in the form of an amusing cover version of a well known track. On 'Numb Nuts', the legendary rockers have decided to re-work Fatboy Slim's 'Rockafella Skank', which makes for intriguing listening. Voices growl and strain as drum pads are smacked to hell with the infamous lines of 'Right about now/The funk soul brother/Check it out now/The funk soul brother' ringing around the speakers. But, these boys certainly pay attention to detail. Where the original floor-filling classic stops after three minutes, winding down only to speed up and begin its lyrical refrain over and over, this guitar-frenzied rendition does the same, but rather than using fancy studio equipment, the boys use their mouths. It's peculiar to say the least.

As is track 'Cake', a five-second blast of noisy instruments and the word 'cake' shouted at a high volume. The rest of the record, although containing funny lyrics, is a straightforward guitar thrash, complete with riffs and hooks that bring something new to the table.

With 17 tracks and a surprisingly short disc running time, Snuff's current work is something that has to be experienced live, as proved by a thrilling performance at the Astoria with Less Than Jake a few months back. In the meantime, the boys are touring overseas and having a break, leaving you with this CD to annoy your neighbours with. A glorious piece of noise that will be played time and time again on your CD-player. Now, children, let's sing altogether now: 'CAAAKKKKEEEE'!
