Dead Kids - Fear and Fluoride (Salvia / XL)
4/5
By: Alex Pyper
"There's a conspiracy about the wort'ah!" exclaims Mike Frankel of Dead Kids. It is unclear what exactly he has been drinking, although 'Fear and Fluoride' certainly assaults us with a clattering exploration of doubt and altered mind states.
The screech of the verses, in which Frankel's yelping voice is reminiscent of The Hives, gives way to a roar of a chorus that soars as much as it punches through the jagged chaos. At times the chorus seems to contain an almost reverent quality, putting it pleasingly at odds with the rest of the song where screaming anarchic guitars that sit alongside a timid synth are held down by a strident and dance-worthy fuzzy bass and drums combination.
Whilst perhaps not everyone's cup of tea, this remains a confident, and potentially anthemic offering from an energetic new band who, if this is anything to judge them by, may well go on to greater things.
