Maximo Park - Karaoke Plays (Warp)

3/5

By: Sian Norris

Maximo Park - Karaoke Plays'Karaoke Plays' commences with unnervingly delicate guitar picking before opening up into a more characteristically steady pop track, one in which the verses cruise along nicely, the vocals are ably supported by a rolling guitar and hammered keyboard, but it's only when they chorus arrives that this track comes in to its own. With the distortion suddenly turned way up, Paul Smith's vocal positively soars over the cacophony.

Whilst not as urgent as some of their earlier work, 'Karaoke Plays' does have 'HIT' written on it, albeit faintly. It's listener friendly enough, but has a curious heaviness and intelligence to it which lifts it above being merely average. You should look forward to hearing their cover of Justin Timberlake's 'Like I Love You', too, as it makes up the B Side of this fine package, which also comes with a karaoke friendly sheet music and sing-a-long-a-lyrics.
