Kano - Feel Free (679)
3/5

When Kano first emerged two years ago with debut album Home Sweet Home, he was riding the wave of success that briefly greeted the garage and emerging grime scenes. Having picked up a MOBO and completed a sell-out tour since, many predicted big things for him.
However, two years away is the equivalent of a lifetime in music terms, especially when your fan base was built on a genre as fleeting as garage. Follow-up London Town looked to broaden that fan base, with Mr Smooth Craig David guesting on the first single, 'This Is The Girl', and musical chameleon Damon Albarn singing the hook and producing on it's follow-up 'Feel Free'.
Albarn pitches 'Feel Free' at the mid-point between his work with Gorillaz and this year's The Good, The Bad & The Queen experiment, all smoky dub beats and a repetitive riff on the old Joanna. For good measure a children's choir pops up to sing the lilting 'la, la, la's of the chorus, and it all adds up to make Kano's most interesting single thus far. To his credit he manages to engage the listener with his tales of gun-related media paranoia and his reflections on life in good old London Town, preventing 'Feel Free' from sounding like a remix he's done of a lost Albarn composition and more of a collaborative effort.
