The Enemy – We’ll Live And Die in These Towns (Stiff)

2/5

By: Alex Pyper

The Enemy - We'll Live and Die in These TownsOut of frantic acoustic strumming and momentary fog of dissonance come the dulcet Coventry tones of The Enemy with their new single 'We'll Live and Die in These Towns', lifted from the album of the same title.

Soaring strings, pounding drums and sullen enunciation create a complete facsimile of Paul Weller's old band; if more eloquent, the verses could have been lifted from 'Going Underground'. However, the chorus is melodic melancholic brilliance, in which stirring and resonating guitar chords hang subtly over the rest of the soundscape.

With this The Enemy manage to reign in their Jam tribute-band tendencies and put their stamp on what otherwise would be essentially a borrowed song, lifting the tone from transcendent regional hopelessness to one of morale-boosting inspiration. Generic, but not utterly worthless.
