Lovvers - Laughing Man / Search For Gold (Jonson Family)
5/5
By: Yousif Nur
My unconditional, assured love is now confirmed for Nottingham's Lovvers. This, their third single on Jonson Family records, is an affirmation of their fierce, dissonant genius. Granted the following is a bold statement to make, but Lovvers are a vital punk band, swimming against the tide with integral, subversive and honest talent. There's nothing pre-packaged here. One might even go as far as to say simply, it's just f**king brutal.
There's little to no point in describing sound-a-likes because their traits lean towards 80's hardcore and are as clear as day for all to see. But if you must know, Black Flag, Void and Melvins are just some of the names one can conjure up on first impressions. Just don't dwell on the past, because you don't need to.
Their lyrics are either muffled or screamed out in an agonizing manner. 'Laughing Man' includes the line "You drink your milk / now you like the taste..." - banal, maybe, but it's a small flaw. 'Search For Gold' has a murky, ominous bass riff intro that builds up into a raucous punk number; hard, fast, to the point and that's that, thank you very much.
There's none of the seemingly ostentatious, pretentious drivel you're so often given by post-hardcore types then. What you see, or in this case, hear, is what you get. The band make no bones about their modus operandi, playing hard and fast and... that's about it. But their real selling point is their confrontational, 'f**k you' stance, as uncompromising as it is unnerving. Most importantly, it's strangely compelling. Where they head in 2008 will be interesting to see, but there's little doubting that Lovvers can only go from strength to strength.
