Underworld - Beautiful Burnout (Infected)
1/5
By: Chris O'Toole
Do you remember the nineties?
Everybody was on cheap heroin, life was easy, and times were good. We let our guard down and Underworld snuck in on the coattails of New Labour. Their one hit, 'Born Slippy', rose high in the charts and maintains its position as the quintessential dance floor filler. But, times have changed. We are all post modern now. The world has moved on. Vocoders are now household items; they no longer impress the man in the street. The shock and awe has been removed. This is the comedown.
'Beautiful Burnout' is tired in sentiment and overplayed on the first listen. The drums are thin, like a child's army. The synths are old material found on the cutting room floor and rehashed into an unpalatable novelty of a song. Naturally there are three re-mixes - big beat, dub steep, freak-beat - by Mark Knight. But it's all undistinguished and unimaginative - music by numbers.
