Noah & The Whale - 2 Bodies 1 Heart / Rocks & Daggers (Young and Lost Club)
4/5
By: Chris O'Toole
Sounding like an historic Christmas, Noah & the Whale are the drunken balladeer outside your window with love in his heart and whisky in his blood. It's timeless in its quality and beautiful in its sentiment - a love song to a long lost muse. Shining an inquisitive light on yesterday's joy and examining the scars for what they are. The cold light of day takes no hostages, but the simplicity and childlike wonder here give a real sense of renewal. Rye smiles and rebirth are the order of the day.
Unashamedly influenced by Will Oldham and his many guises, or the Black Heart Procession - it's a lilting, lyrical oddity of off-kilter romance tottering like a drunk through a bar - we are all elegantly wasted, as the saying goes. Composed by Charlie Fink, it's a folk ballad from a different era - a knowing wink at the past with lessons learned. Filled with fiddle, harmonium, Noah & the Whale's music bubbles under surfaced, laced with joy and irony. The group have already supported the whimsical New York uber-hipster Jeffery Lewis, as well as Feist and Broken Social Scene and the future looks bright indeed for the group.
It's a little sentimental, a little over wrought, but dazzling and engaging none the less.
