Fredo Viola - The Sad Song (Because)

4/5

By: Sofie Jenkinson

Fredo Viola - The Sad SongIn a grandiose act of beauty, this song hinges entirely on the vibrant tones of Viola's vocal chords, layered to create an extremely full sound, bursting at the edges. A haunting tone runs like a vein throughout the song's existence, casting shadows on the wall. The intoxicating sound of Viola's voice traps itself in your head as if it were bouncing off the walls in a mahogany lined monastery.

The intense and thoughtful tone of this song is not repeated in the supplementary tracks included on this single, breaking the mould of expectation at each turn. 'Hogwash' for example brings elements of Aboriginal music, the influence of the American deep south and other worldly noise experimentation into the fold, which are present in the 'The Sad Song' but in lighter shades.

As an entirety, this offering from Viola illustrates the wealth of talent to be held to account for all this wonderful noise - one that refuses to be pegged down.
