James Yuill - No Surprise (Chess Club)

4/5

By: Sofie Jenkinson

James Yuill - No SurpriseA meshed together wall of sounds and tones creates a canvas for Yuill to use vocal intonation to cut out the shape of 'No Surprise'. The circling and building effect which beats at the heart of the song draws the ears in close and acts as an anchor while the intermittent presence of xylophones and beeps takes rationality and reason by surprise.

It's introspective and courageous; melancholy and full of zest. Sentiments of love driven though the heart with the steak of musical experiment where echoes of Kings Of Convenience shimmer in parts. It is not a song that instantly attaches itself to your favour but one that catches expectations off guard and challenges the boundaries of formulaic songwriting with its playful and heroic nature.
