Adele - Chasing Pavements (XL)
3/5
By: Alex Lee Thomson
When I first heard Adele I thought; "gosh, Amy Winehouse without the emotion", but with this single I'm left thinking; "gosh, Amy Winehouse without the emotion... or a decent arrangement".
I'm not faulting her otherwise remarkable voice as it's the one saving grace on a single which has as much point as the fluffy end of a broomstick; but it's so dreary in essence that whenever it comes on I phase out and start picturing RSPCA adverts. You can tell the chorus is forced; pushed from her sombre vocal with every breath of strength she has, trying so hard to make this not sound like Jamie Cullum, but inevitably allowing it to do so.
Moving slowly towards Dusty Springfield, it fails just shy of actually rubbing those goosebumps that Dusty inevitably would if presented with the same lifeless arrangement.
