Blood Red Shoes - You Bring Me Down [re-release] (V2)
4/5

There are some bands that seem to be releasing (and re-releasing) singles at such an alarming rate that it's no wonder the music industry is collapsing in on itself. Blood Red Shoes, a duo from Brighton, have released six singles on two different record labels but have yet to release their debut album, a fact not helped when their V2 palmed them off to Mercury just before the album was about to drop late last year.
'You Bring Me Down' was originally released by V2 in November 2006 to a muted response, but since then the band have toured relentlessly and a minor buzz has formed. It's when the band are on stage that things really seem to happen, their chemistry and enthusiasm coming across more so then on record. But 'You Bring Me Down' tries it's best to capture some of that spirit and on the whole it succeeds, with not a second of its three and half minutes going to waste.
Producer Mike Crossey (Arctic Monkeys, The Bravery and, ahem, Atomic Kitten) adds a pop sheen without smothering the raw power the band can muster, creating a radio-friendly noise as opposed to the rough edges of, for example, The White Stripes.
Lyrically, it's all teenage angst and dark imagery mixed together with sweet 'ooohhh' background vocals, before Laura-Mary Carter lunges into a breakneck chorus of "Nothing can stop this creeping fear". It's not subtle, it's not cerebral but one thing's for sure 'You Bring Me Down' has earned its right to a second chance.
