Little Dragon - Constant Surprises (Peacefrog)

1/5

By: Thomas Hannan

Little Dragon - Constant SurprisesThe press release states that "Little Dragon takes tired musical traces and styles, gives them a shot in the arm to leave us with something bright and positive." An ominous pre-cursor to a first listen I'm sure you'll agree. After all, this sort of comment usually translates into 'cocky upstarts with Clash/Sex Pistols/Joy Division obsession (delete as appropriate) essentially copy idols but do so with cool haircuts - thus rendering it ok and guaranteeing front page of NME status.'

Thankfully, my fears are allayed by the upbeat, enticingly disjointed music, glazed over with a tantalisingly aloof and sensual voice, emanating from the speakers. Essentially soul music, its the kind of thing that's so strangely non-referential that its impossible to dislike. I suppose if you're looking for comparisons then the likes of Groove Armada come closest, but even then it's a tenuous link. Gloriously enjoyable and un-pigeon-holeable. And nearly perfect.
