The Presets - My People (Modular)

3/5

By: Michael Cragg

The Presets - My PeopleAustralian duo The Presets made a minor splash a couple of years ago with their debut album Beams, just as other electro bands such as Cut Copy, Shy Child, Shitdisco et al were bringing their Daft Punk/ New Order inspired songs to a burgeoning audience. 'My People', the first single from their forthcoming album Apocolypso, roars out of the blocks with a gargantuan synth riff that would literally remove hair from your head if you were sat in front of a speaker (why you'd be sat in front of a speaker is a moot point, just let the image fill your mind).

From its wall shaking beginnings it never really lets up, Julian Hamilton and Kim Moyes simply layering more and more sounds on top of one another. Subtlety is clearing not a strong point, but then it's dance music and from that point of view it does exactly what it should do: Crazed, repetitive beats? Check. Fuzzy, slightly off kilter keyboards? Got 'em. Ridiculous lyrics complete with crowd friendly chant? Oh yeah. Let me hear you sing, "I'm here with all of my people...let me hear you scream if you're with me/ Yeah, Yeah, Yeah". And yet I can't help feeling it's music not meant for these delicate ears. After a few listens I had to have a lie down with some sweet tea and try and ignore the thudding beat still playing at the back of my brain.
