Correcto - Do It Better (Domino)

3/5

By: Charlie Potter

Correcto - Do it BetterSonic Youth are not the first band that spring to mind when you hear Correcto, but if you listen carefully to the b-side of 'Do It Better' you will see that it is in there somewhere - this immediately grants them ten points and a get out of jail free card, but forgetting less widely accepted criteria for good guitar music, it's also a treat because it's one of those simple, brainless, unpretentious, unassuming type of songs that I will never tire of. This is what I like to call rock music, rock music that is played by a good old band. You like the sound of that, huh? Remember how much you like rock music played by bands? Well here it is! Of course I know that it never went away but somehow this track makes you think IT'S BACK.

But I do find it easy to get carried away writing about up tempo rock songs. What I find hard is trying to tell you why it's OK to listen to music that in no way broadens your horizons. Well first of all, it's good to feel good, and secondly maybe, just maybe, the constant cyclic regurgitating that is creative culture isn't such a bad thing. Maybe listening to something new that at the core of it isn't actually all that new is just fine - after all, the context around the event will always be infinitely different.

But what about this particular song? Well the sentiment is as accessible and simple as the melody, but said sentiment isn't accessible because it's brainless, it's accessible because it's true - it's about trying to do all the things that you plan to do in a day and never quite being able to do it. And as I write this, I am putting off writing a new C.V. so I for one deeply understand where they're coming from, but yet it's essentially a positive song, because it's sort of saying 'that's life, get on with it'.

After 2 and a half minutes of guitar fun you cannot help but fear the worst - a drivelling sentimental song to show the bands diversity - but thankfully no that is not what happens at all, although other bonus track 'The Plan' is much weaker, it's still an acceptable little b-side and a quick check reveals that it shan't be on the album. So I've high hopes for this fun little indie band - let's hope they have to make the album coming out later this month a good one.
