Joe Lean & the Jing Jang Jong - Lonely Buoy (Mercury)

2/5

By: Gareth Roberts

Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong - Lonely BuoyHeavily hyped by everyone from the weekly music rags to the tabloids, Joe Lean & the Jing Jang Jong are the latest indie 'it band' to emerge from the ashes of the nu-rave revolution.

Now, as happy as I am that the giddy neon days of the recent past now look to be over, when the alternative is this kind of thing the relief isn't quite so sweet. It's not bad - it's just completely uninspiring.

Joe Lean, with the help of his Jing Jang Jong, seems to be peddling the kind of fodder which many have exhausted before, and whilst they do it in a way which possesses an element of originality (think unconventional melodies and changes in pace), you can't help but feel that the more obligatory elements override such attempts to differentiate.

They deserve their slot on the proverbial conveyor belt of indie pop, although don't be surprised if they disappear into the distance sooner rather than later.
