The Long Blondes - Century (Rough Trade)
3/5
By: Alex Lee Thomson
There's not many things in life more rewarding than seeing a band hyped beyond their means disappear and then come back with a half decent tune. Alas, 'Century' sounds too stupidly like disco-era Madonna to ever really work, but it's nonetheless a fairly decent tune with enough surrealism to get your head in a twirl while your left food motions toward the dancefloor... albeit in a very half arsed 80's-kitsch way.
It's practically nabbed in-whole from Blondie, but lacks any of the shindig fun that the Long Blondes' first album delivered buckets of. But it's not bad... not bad, though nor is it tremendously listenable, a goal that surely every song should strive to be. I wanted so much to love this as I did 'Motorways' and the like, but it's too little, too late and I'm bored of the 80's revival, especially when it's done so badly. Maybe it's a grower, but I don't have the endurance to find out, not when the Operator Please album is perched on the edge of my desk.
