R.E.M. - Supernatural Superserious (Warner)

4/5

By: Alex Lee Thomson

REM - Supernatural SuperseriousOkay, I'm biased. R.E.M. are my most beloved band and I have no qualms about ranting on such facts, but I recognize why people don't appreciate their music and so whenever a new album looms I get a nervous gut-ache like a parent waiting for their child's exam results. Will this be an all A's report with headmaster commendations, or a humiliating wall of D's that I will once again have to shy away from, nervously laughing?

With guitars so expressive they're darn right articulate and a melody that easily lands you into New Adventures in Hi-Fi territory, this is the return to form one could have hoped for... very much the former of the two abovementioned scenarios. Not that R.E.M. were ever truly off-form of course, rather this is the obviously more outstanding side of them that's a joy to hear and wave in front of the band's naysayers with a gloating sense of complacency. It's when an artist releases a track like this it makes you proud to say that they're your favourite band.

The usual lyrical whip and bouncing strings, R.E.M. have really struck platinum with this anthemically supercharged pop song that sounds excellent in every way.
