Santogold - L.E.S. Artistes (Atlantic)
4/5

Santogold is wicked. And this single is snap-crackle-POP.
'L.E.S Artistes' captures everything that is good now, and everything that I hope will be tomorrow, about pop music. It's optimistic, perhaps containing an underpinning hint of melancholy, with a rousing chorus over a collection of fantastic sounds going on behind her breathtaking vocals....; you could fall in love to this song.
I've fallen in love with Santogold.
With a voice that is something between... Cindi Lauper? And Gwen Steffani...? I don't even know; it's just basically lovely. And it wouldn't be surprised if it hit the charts HARD - everything about this debut single screams 'summertime smash'.
But what genre is this? There's therapeutic guitar picking and an unusual blend of natural sounding drum hits and r'n'b kick drums... I can't figure out if 'L.E.S Artistes' is dancey, chilled out or just a bit girly.
Either way, I'm not complaining. What a debut. Can't wait to hear what the album has in store...
