Pivot - In The Blood EP (Warp)
5/5
By: Sam Crawford
Pivot are the first Australian band to sign to the legendary Warp Records, and bring credit to their nation with this audacious offering of spluttering, screeching and dark-grooved elements all melded together into a big ball of sound that provides a great deal of grimy pleasure.
The bass riff starts with a dirty, sinister tone, with a synth coming over the top with a howling industrial feel; think Michael Jackson's style submerged deep inside a K-hole. Then the sublime shrieking and moaning guitar comes into play, nodding in The Jesus Lizard's direction with wandering erratic delectability. This brings a welcoming barrage of sonic activity before unexpectedly flipping into an 80's funk style synthesizer breakdown, with the bass throbbing away behind it.
There is enough to keep you occupied for a good deal of plays, and I really look forward to future offerings from this promising group.
