The Star Spangles - 'Bazooka!!!' (Capitol)

3/5

By: Matt Tomiak

The Star Spangles - 'Bazooka!!!'

They may hail from New York, dress in impeccable vintage attire and nurture perfectly dishevelled haircuts, but don't let that put you off.

The Star Spangles really aren't too concerned with cool. And, rewardingly, the quartet rise above tiresome 'scene' mediocrity via a gung-ho 37-minute debut album of unrelenting punk-rock kicks.

'Bazooka!!!', a knowing, hook-heavy barrage of Ramones-indebted good-time fun, isn't intent on being fashionable: it just wants to party and maybe break things. And despite the unashamedly kitsch bubblegum pop edge of tracks such as 'Angela' and 'Science Fiction/Science Fact', 'Bazooka!!!' still manages to rock as hard as anything 2003's been faced with so far. Surprisingly good.
