The Ruby Suns - Kenya Dig It? EP (Memphis Industries)
4/5

Jesus, this is good!
Title track 'Kenya Dig It?' takes all the obvious hints from the brilliance of Midlake to the ambience of MGMT and injects it with an incredibly groovy 60's beat, as New Zealand outfit The Ruby Suns prove there is evidently so much more to the land down, down under than comedy band two pieces and Jonah Lomu.
The Ruby Suns here provide us with a four track single that's swimming in musical variables, from the tribal trinkets, chimes and tonks definitive of 'Khski Kikoi' to the smooth, dreamy harmonies that transform 'Papatuanuku' from what might be an easy to overlook "world music" track to a lucrative indie sensation.
Listening to Kenya Dig It? in an EP setting with all its added features, it's no secret that songwriter Ryan McPhun drew on his aural experiences while tip toeing around Africa (yup, note the pun in the title, hilarious!) in the production of the bands second LP Sea Lion, since much of the rhythm is synchronized with a tribal aesthetic. Gasping into a pop sentiment, this EP rises just that little bit above the rest of The Rubys' output. Indeed, a sheer pleasure.
