Deus - Architect (Universal)
3/5
By: Sam Crawford
Three years on from their last offering, Belgian rockers Deus return with this single from their recently released album Vantage Point.
'Architect' has a grooving funk backbone to it, along with retro electronic organ sounds and a conventional rock feel. The vocals hold familiar melody; catchy and commercial, and the lyrics aren't the most imaginative; smelling quite strongly of cheese, but at least they've got the positive message of overcoming adversity to help the world...it's just their deliverance which is a bit cheddary; "From the coast of Tahiti, to the hills of Rome, step aside cause the man will take the Nobel prize home".
The song isn't bad at all, but with Deus' greater foray into the mainstream mentality; it feels like they have regressed somewhat with this track. Deus have often been described as hard to pigeon hole, but I have no problem with saying 'Architect' is alternative rock music which caters to the masses. You have to give them credit though, it does have certain magnetic appeal, and contains enough buzz for you to easily dance to.
